Meteorologists stated on Tuesday that the southwest monsoon has made further progress into additional regions, including parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, and the North Arabian Sea. Conditions are favorable for the monsoon to advance into more areas of Chhattisgarh and Telangana within the next 24 hours. Monsoon’s progress is expected to weaken over the next week, which could lead to intensified heatwave conditions in northwest and eastern India.

Additionally, a cyclonic circulation has been identified over Northeast Assam and nearby regions. Meteorologists explained that the prevailing low-level warm winds from the northwest were influencing subdued monsoon activity over the Bay of Bengal, extending the hot weather period in central and northern India.

West Bengal and Sikkim

  1. The IMD has issued a Red Alert in West Bengal and Sikkim due to the forecast of isolated extremely heavy rainfall on June 12th and 13th, 2024.
  2. Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph), is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during the next 7 day.
  3. Incessant rainfall on Wednesday triggered new landslides in various parts of Sikkim, though no casualties were reported as of the evening, according to officials. While there have been no major landslides since Tuesday, debris has blocked and damaged National Highway 10, which is crucial for connecting Sikkim with West Bengal’s Kalimpong district, officials from both states reported.
  4. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, including staying indoors, avoiding low-lying areas prone to flooding, and following updates from local authorities and weather advisories.

Assam

  1. Light to moderate rainfall is very likely to occur at most places, with heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta & Bongaigaon districts and with heavy rainfall at isolated places over South Salmara Mankachar,Goalpara, Bajali, Tamulpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath ,Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia & Cachar districts .
  2. 25 Villages have been affected by floods in 2 districts. Kamrup district has been severely affected by the floods. Residents are advised to stay indoors and keep vigil of the situation.
  3. Due to continuous rain, the water levels of the Brahmaputra, Kopili, and Kushiyara rivers have risen above the danger mark.
  4. Relief camps have been opened, and Rescue operations are being carried out by NDRF, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services, and local administration.

Maharashtra

  1. The IMD has issued a warning for very heavy rainfall in parts of Maharashtra, including South and Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, South Madhya Maharashtra, and Konkan. Mumbai has been significantly affected, with flooding and traffic disruptions reported.
  2. There would be isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate rainfall, and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph in several districts, including Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Sangli, Beed, Jalna, Nasik, and Pune.
  3. Additionally, the IMD has predicted a decrease in rainfall intensity starting from June 12 across Mumbai, Thane, and other districts of Maharashtra.

Goa

  1. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in North and South Goa districts.
  2. Squally weather with winds of 35 to 55 kmph, and gusts up to 65 kmph, is predicted along and off the coast of South Maharashtra and Goa from June 9 to June 13. Fishermen are advised to avoid these areas during this time.

Odisha and Andhra Pradesh

  1. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the monsoon is expected to cover Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and the northwest Bay of Bengal within the next three to four days. An official mentioned that the Bay of Bengal arm of the monsoon is currently weak and is awaiting a fresh pulse to advance further.

Karnataka

  1. The IMD has issued a “Very Heavy Rain, Thunderstorm & Lightning, Squall” warning for interior regions of Karnataka. Shimoga, Gadag, and Devanagere have been issued a red alert for very heavy rainfall. Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka received a yellow alert.
  2. Thunderstorms and sporadic rain are expected to continue, with substantial rainfall warnings for Uttara Kannada, Dharwad, and Belagavi.
  3. Rain is expected in Bengaluru, Karnataka, as well as other parts of the state till June 17, weather agencies forecasted.

Telangana

  1. The monsoon is advancing into additional regions of Telangana, with moderate to heavy rain or thunderstorms likely in numerous locations.
  2. The Meteorological Center of Hyderabad predicts a continued rainy spell for the next three days, with a yellow alert for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday due to possible heavy rainfall.

 Kerala and Lakshadweep

  1. Continued heavy rain in several parts of Kerala due to a cyclonic circulation over Marathwada. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Kasaragod and Kannur, and orange alerts for several other districts.
  2. Squally weather is likely along and off the coast of Kerala and Lakshadweep, with winds of 35–45 kmph and gusts up to 55 kmph. Fishermen are advised to avoid these sea areas between June 11 and June 14.
