General Forecast:

Today, June 27, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rainfall across multiple regions of the country as the Southwest Monsoon continues its advance. The monsoon’s northern limit now includes Mundra, Mehsana, Udaipur, Shivpuri, Siddhi, Lalitpur, Chaibasa, Haldia, Pakur, Sahibganj, and Raxaul. Meteorologists anticipate favourable circumstances for its further march into the remaining areas of the North Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and portions of various northern states during the next 3-4 days. 

In the next few days, widespread rainfall with thunderstorm and lightning is expected in Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Karnataka, Kerala & Mahe, Lakshadweep, Gujarat state, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh. 

The eastern and northeastern regions are not immune to the wet weather. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is expected in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Heavy rainfall in  Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh and Haryana is also expected.

Severe Weather Alerts:

  • The IMD has issued an orange alert for the following regions for June 29th and 30th for Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Mandi, and Bilaspur
  • Apart from the 5 regions mentioned above, the rest of Himachal Pradesh has been given a yellow alert. The IMD predicts that the monsoon will move across the state in the next three days, bringing rainfall between June 26th and July 1st.

Travel and Supply Chain Impact:

North East India:

Potential disruptions/disruptions:

  1. In Sikkim, the NH-10 connecting Gangtok to Siliguri was closed at Likhubir due to a landslide. Citizens and non-essential travelers are advised not to travel along the NH-10 till the route is cleared of all debris. Furthermore, due to flood warnings, nonessential personnel are advised to stay clear of low-lying flood plains. 
  2. Heavy to very heavy rain has been predicted over Northeast India between June 27 and June 30. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) between June 28th and 30th. Heavy rainfalls might trigger highway landslides, stranding vehicles and disrupting essential services. 
  3. The Brahmaputra is expected to rise by 5-30 cm by tomorrow evening, compared to early morning today. The Assamese areas of DikhowMukh, Majuli, Baligaon, and other nearby areas will likely be affected. 

Himachal Pradesh

  1. On June 26, a major landslide has hit NH 707 in Shillai, Sirmaur District, Himachal Pradesh, creating widespread disruptions and raising serious safety concerns. Paonata Sahib National Highway 707 has brought traffic to a standstill and disrupted essential services, and it is expected that it will take some time before the route is opened. 

Goa, Coastal Maharashtra and Coastal Karnataka

  • Squally weather and strong winds along the coast are affecting fishing activities. Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the sea.
  • A high wave alert has been issued for: 

Maharashtra 

  1. Palghar, Zai to Vasai; 
  2. Raigarh, Ulwa Moha to Bagmandla; 
  3. Ratnagiri, Veshawi-Bankot to Jambhari; 
  4. Thane; 
  5. Mumbai; 
  6. Sindhudurg, Vijayadurg Hr to Terekhol  

and Goa 

  1. North, Chapora to Panji 
  2. South Goa, Santerem Pt (Vasco) to Kolamb 

Waves ranging from 3.3 to 4.2 meters have been predicted. It is recommended to exercise caution when conducting marine operations or nearshore recreation.

Kerala and Lakshadweep [high wave alert zones]

  • Alappuzha (yellow alert), Ernakulam (yellow alert), Kannur (orange alert), Kasaragod (red alert), Kollam, Kozhikode, Malappuram(orange alert), Thiruvananthapuram (yellow alert) and Thrissur districts (orange alert) of Kerala have been issued a high wave warning. Moreover, the districts with orange alerts have been warned that people conducting marine operations and nearshore recreation activities must be cautious. 
  • The islands of Agatti (red alert), Amini (red alert), Andrott (red alert), Karavatti (red alert), and Minicoy (orange alert) have been issued a high wave alert as well. Islands under red alerts should take the following precautions: small vessels should avoid operating, nearshore recreational activities should be entirely ceased, and be aware of potential erosion and wave surges. 
  • Furthermore, islands under orange alerts should take the following precautions: people conducting marine operations and nearshore recreation activities must be cautious. 
  • Squally weather and strong winds along the coast are affecting fishing activities. Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the sea.

Karnataka and Western Coast

Today, coastal Karnataka is expected to get extremely heavy rains. Authorities have encouraged inhabitants to take measures. Heavy rain is also expected in portions of Konkan and Goa, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala, and Mahe.
