The India Meteorological Department of India (IMD) has issued a red alert for Goa, predicting the possibility of extremely heavy showers during the day. In view of the heavy rainfall warning in the state, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant declared a holiday for all schools from pre-primary to Class 12.

Similarly, IMD has issued an orange alert for West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Maharashtra, and Karnataka for heavy showers on July 8.

The IMD has alerted on the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and intense to very intense precipitation on July 8/9 in the hills and plains of Uttarakhand, including, Tehri, Pauri, Bageshwar, Almora, Nainital, and Champawat districts for July 10.

Over Northwest and Central India, IMD has forecasted widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm & lightning. The states, which will witness such weather conditions until July 12, include Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir.

The weather department has forecasted “heavy rainfall” in Bihar and Odisha on July 8, in Arunachal Pradesh on July 11, and in Assam and Meghalaya on July 10 and July 11. Heavy showers have also been predicted for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura until July 11.

Isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Konkan & Goa & Madhya Maharashtra during July 9-July11; Gujarat Region on July 9; Kerala & Mahe on July 8; Telangana on July 8/9; Coastal Karnataka on July 9; North Interior Karnataka till July 10; South Interior Karnataka July 8/10.

Travel and Supply Chain Impact

Mumbai

  • Mumbai metropolis received a lot of rain today; the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that over 300 mm of rain were recorded in several areas between 1 am and 7 am. 
  • The Central Railways said that some trains had to be canceled due to the intense precipitation. Mumbai’s high-risk areas were most hit, causing waterlogging and problems with suburban rail services, according to the city body.
  • Heavy rainfall is predicted for today. All BMC, government, and private schools and colleges in Mumbai (BMC region) have announced a vacation for the first session of the school year to prevent any disturbance to the children. 

Himachal Pradesh

  • On Sunday, 07 July, 2024, there were reports of light rain in a few locations in Himachal Pradesh. For the next 24 hours, there is a low-to-moderate danger of flash floods in a few isolated areas of the districts of Shimla, Kangra, and Chamba, according to the regional meteorological office’s advisory. 
  • A “yellow” notice has been issued by the meteorological office for isolated areas on July 10–11 due to heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning.  
  • The meteorological service has also issued a warning over the possibility of damage to horticulture, plantations, and standing crops, in addition to partial damage from high winds and rain to huts, kutcha homes, and other susceptible structures. The advisory also foresees waterlogging in low-lying regions and traffic interruptions.

Uttar Pradesh

  • The beginning of the monsoon has brought about extensive, heavy rainfall, which has raised river levels considerably in the districts of Kushinagar, Balrampur, and Shravasti, resulting in floods and circumstances similar to floods. 
  • Thirteen villages in the Khadda tehsil have been submerged by the Gandak River in Kushinagar, which has crossed the danger threshold, according to a report from the Relief Commissioner’s Office. 
  • In a similar vein, the Rapti River in Shravasti has impacted eighteen villages by exceeding the danger level.
  • Heavy rainfall is expected in Gorakhpur, Bahraich, Gonda, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Maharajganj, Balrampur, Shravasti, Lakhimpur, and other districts, according to the meteorological office. 
  • In addition, the Sharda River in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Nepal had a large amount of water release on Sunday as a result of Nepal’s heavy rains. 

Rajasthan

  • Taranagar in the Churu district of Rajasthan received 141 mm of rain in a 24-hour period, while Surot in Karauli recorded 131 mm. 
  • The heavy rains continued throughout the state. Sunday saw mild to moderate rainfall in eastern and western Rajasthan, according to the Meteorological Department. 
  • The districts of Churu, Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Dausa, Karauli, Jaipur, and Dungarpur saw heavy to extremely high rains in certain places. 
  • In Rajasthan’s western region, Taranagar recorded the most rainfall, while Surot received the most in the eastern region. 
  • At 40.8 degrees Celsius, Phalodi had the highest recorded maximum temperature, while Jaisalmer had the highest recorded lowest temperature of 30.2 degrees Celsius.

West Bengal

  • In certain low-lying portions of West Bengal’s sub-Himalayan districts, constant rainfall has caused flood-like conditions and hampered road links. The Meteorological Department has predicted more intense precipitation. 
  • Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is predicted in the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, and Alipurduar through July 12, according to the Meteorological Department.
