General weather alert:

  • On July 11, 2024, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for parts of Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim. 
  • An Orange alert has been issued in East Madhya Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Goa. 

Travel and Supply Chain Impact

Uttarakhand 

  • As of July 10, 2024, heavy rainfall and landslides have led to the closure of 256 roads in Uttarakhand, India, including 3 national highways and 6 border roads. Notably, the Badrinath National Highway in Chamoli district near Joshimath is closed, impacting travel in the region.
  • On July 11, 2024, a landslide in Bhanerpani, Joshimath, caused heavy debris to fall on the Badrinath National Highway at around 06:45 (local time), blocking vehicular movement near the Patal Ganga Lungsi tunnel.
  • Major roads like State Highway 77, Gujrada-Ranipokhari bypass road, and Gujrada-Ranipokhari road remain disrupted. The main Kailash Mansarovar route (Ghatiabagd-Lipulekh route) is damaged at many places, preventing movement in the high Himalayan areas. Furthermore, Roads including Pithoragarh-Tawaghat, Ghatiabagd-Lipulekh, Tawaghat-Sobla, Gunji-Kuti-Jyolingkong, and Dhapa-Milam are closed, affecting connectivity to the border areas. 

Uttar Pradesh

  • As of July 10, 2024, swollen rivers in 10 Uttar Pradesh districts caused 17 deaths from lightning, drowning, and snakebites. The affected districts include Balrampur, Pilibhit, Shravasti, Kannauj, Prayagraj, Kaushambi, and Pratapgarh. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed rescue and relief operations, and the Indian Air Force rescued seven people in Pilibhit.
  • A high alert has been issued in 11 Uttar Pradesh districts, including Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, Siddharthnagar, Barabanki, Gonda, Shravasti, Kushinagar, Ballia, Hapur, and Badaun, due to 4 lakh cusecs of water released from Nepal’s Girja and Sharda barrages, raising the Saryu River to 106.216 meters and rising 2 centimetres per hour.

Goa

  • On July 10, 2024, Konkan Railway services in Pernem, Goa, were disrupted due to water seepage in a tunnel caused by ongoing heavy rains. These weather-related disruptions impacted several trains, with efforts underway to restore normal operations.

West Bengal 

  • All traffic on NH10, a vital highway connecting the plains to North Bengal Hills and Sikkim, is halted due to landslide damage. Kalimpong’s District Magistrate announced the road closure will extend for another 6-7 days for repairs at multiple locations, including a major collapse at Selfie Point, with vehicles diverted via Panbu, Lava, Gorubathan, or Munsung routes.
  • The Alipore Meteorological Department forecasts increased rain due to monsoon and low-pressure axes, with heavy to very heavy rains expected in North Bengal’s upper five districts and thundershowers in the lower three districts from Thursday to Saturday.

Karnataka 

  • Schools and colleges in Karnataka have been temporarily closed until July 12 due to incessant monsoon rainfall affecting the state. The heavy rains have impacted many districts, including coastal areas like Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada. The Bengaluru Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for most parts of Karnataka until July 12, with a red alert for these three areas for two days and a yellow alert for July 10 and 11.
