General weather alert:
- On July 10, 2024, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for parts of West Bengal and Sikkim
- Orange alert has been issued in parts Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya and Goa. The weather department has also issued warnings of heavy rainfall throughout the day.
Travel and Supply Chain Impact
Maharashtra
- As of 09 July 2024, heavy rains and floods have been reported in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The heavy rains have led to flooded streets across the city. All schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and rural areas of Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg were closed for the day.
- Due to the heavy rain forecast in Mumbai, Mumbai Suburbs, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, all exams scheduled for 09 Jul 2024 at the University of Mumbai were postponed. Residents should exercise caution on 10 July 2024, as there could be supply chain disruptions. Moreover, The MeT department indicated that heavy rain will impact the Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada regions from July 8 to July 10, 2024.
Uttarakhand
- Continuous rain had led to flooding of rivers in the Kumaon region, blocking hundreds of rural motorable roads and leaving several villages in Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar districts heavily waterlogged. The Badrinath National Highway was closed due to falling boulders at Chungi Dhar of Joshimath, caused by a landslide on 09 July.
- Severe rainfall has disrupted rail operations in the state. In Haldwani, the Lalkuan railway station was submerged, causing train services to be diverted to alternate stations like Pantnagar and Rudrapur.
Uttar Pradesh
- The Meteorological Department forecasts heavy rain and thundershowers for parts of Uttar Pradesh on July 10, with the Terai areas expected to be particularly affected. Swollen rivers in 10 districts have caused 17 deaths due to lightning, drowning, and snakebites. The affected districts include Balrampur, Pilibhit, Shravasti, Kannauj, Prayagraj, Kaushambi, and Pratapgarh.
- In Ayodhya, rising water levels in the Saryu river washed away a new concrete structure. The flood situation in Kheri worsened as the Sharda river’s water level rose, trapping 11 people in their houses in Nighasan tehsil. Flooding caused by the Mohana, Suheli, Kaudiyala, and Ghaghra rivers continue to impact Nighasan tehsil. Half of the Dudhwa forest area has been flooded by the Suheli and Mohana rivers, but no harm to any wild animals has been reported.
Goa
- Since July 9, heavy rains and flooding have caused widespread waterlogging in Goa, leading to traffic disruptions in many cities.
- On July 10, flight operations at Goa’s two airports faced brief disruptions due to poor visibility and strong winds, with delays in arrivals and departures. Qatar Airways’ Doha-Goa flight, QR522, was diverted to Bengaluru International Airport due to bad weather.
- Heavy rainfall has significantly disrupted train services, with cancellations and diversions. Water seeping into the Pernem tunnel affected routes between Madure and Pernem, impacting major services like the Mandovi Express, Tejas Express, and Janshatabdi Express. Several trains have been rerouted to avoid the affected areas.
Karnataka
- Torrential rains in Udupi and Dakshina Karnataka on Tuesday caused flooding in Udupi district, disrupting normal life and blocking roads in low-lying areas such as Karkala, Kundapur, Thekkatte, Hirgana, and Kaup. National Highway 66 between Puttur in Udupi and Kolalagiri Road also experienced waterlogging.
- Heavy rains continued in Belthangady, Sullia, and the Gundya-Shirady ghat section, causing traffic snarls. The India Meteorological Centre in Bengaluru has issued warnings of widespread rain in these regions until July 12.
